About Allen Lam

About Allen Wai-yuen Lam

Allen Lam is an accomplished choreographer, movement director and educator. He is known as an innovator in the field of dance for his artistic ability to combine movement with spoken word, visual imagery and music. His approach is uniquely collaborative, partnering with numerous renowned theatre directors, visual artists, designers, musicians and performers to create works in dance, physical theatre, site specific theatre, commercial events, fashion shows and art installations.


Allen graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and obtained his MFA from the Tisch School of the Arts with scholarships from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and New York University.  In 1993, he received the Asia Cultural Council Fellowship to conduct dance research programs in New York. He has worked with major dance companies in Hong Kong and the United States and has performed globally in vast repertoire of works by renowned choreographers from Asia, Europe and America. Independently, he has performed in works by Rosalind Newman, Kevin Wynn and Robert Tannion.


He has also produced, choreographed and performed his own works since 1988, receiving his first grant from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 1995. The same year, he co-founded DanceArt Hong Kong. In 2004, he founded Muse Motion which produced his latest project Beyond Motion & Stillness.


As choreographer, he worked closely with directors in physical theatre productions including “Rashomon”(2018) with Chung Ying Theatre which won Outstanding Production of the Year at the 28th Hong Kong Drama Awards. In 2005, Allen was given the Hong Kong Dance Award for organizing and staging an influential bilateral exchange project Dance Wide HKNY.  He has served as the artistic director for the educational project of the Hong Kong Ballet from 2007-2014, with “Live Your Dream” as the concept, the project received the Hong Kong Dance Award in 2014. He currently serves as the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance.
